Thyroid Foundation of Canada Research Award

The annual TFC research award provides researchers with an opportunity to be granted a one-year award of $50,000. This grant is provided by TFC and is administered with support from the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (CSEM).

Thyroid Foundation of Canada 2023 Research Award

This year’s $50K TFC research grant was awarded to Dr.  Anna Sawka for her project entitled “Physicians’ Opinions on Active Surveillance and Minimally Invasive Ablative Treatment of Small, Low Risk Papillary Thyroid Cancer: A Global Cross-sectional Survey”.   The primary objective is to conduct an online survey and describe, according to global region, physicians’ preferences with respect to management of small, low risk Papillary Thyroid Cancer (PTC).

Dr.  Anna Sawka is a Professor in the Department of Medicine (Endocrinology) and an Affiliate Scientist at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute.   She is the current Editor-in-Chief, of the journal, Thyroid, which is the flagship journal of the American Thyroid Association.  She is also the primary investigator on an ongoing pan-Canadian study offering patients the choice of active surveillance or surgery for primary management of small, low risk PTC.

The co-investigator on this application is Dr. Heather Lochnan, an expert in thyroid cancer, is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and past president of the CSEM.  Dr. Lochnan, as Assistant Dean of Continuing Professional Development brings, expertise in best practices for physician education and knowledge translation.

The secondary objective is to develop an educational toolkit about Active Surveillance (AS) and Minimally Invasive Treatment (MIT) for small, low risk PTC for Canadian physicians.  The educational toolkit will help improve the treatment of thyroid cancer patients across Canada.

Thyroid Foundation of Canada 2023 Research Award

The Thyroid Foundation of Canada (TFC) is very excited to announce the winner of the 2023 TFC Research Award. Congratulations to Dr. Sana Ghaznavi, Clinical Assistant Professor, Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism, at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Ghaznavi is an academic endocrinologist whose practice focuses on the management of thyroid nodules and thyroid cancers. She completed her medical school at the University of Alberta, an endocrinology fellowship at the University of Calgary, and a thyroid cancer fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York city. She now works as a clinical assistant professor within the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism, at the University of Calgary, with a cross appointment to the Department of Oncology.

Dr. Ghaznavi’s research project will be “Exploring limitations in the current standard of care for thyroid hormone replacement therapy in thyroid cancer survivors”. Read more about this research project

Thyroid Foundation of Canada 2021 Research Award

The Thyroid Foundation of Canada is very pleased to announce the winner of a Two-Year TFC Research Award. Congratulations to Dr. Ralf Paschke, Professor of Medicine and Endocrinology at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Paschke is a Professor of Medicine and Endocrinology at the University of Calgary and specializes in thyroid cancer research. He will be working with his PhD student, Paul Stewardson. The aim of the proposed project is to improve diagnostic strategies for thyroid cancer tumours while limiting unnecessary diagnostic surgeries for patients. We are very excited to support and learn more about Dr. Paschke’s advancements to thyroid cancer research in the coming years.

Dr. Pasche’s research project is entitled “Classification of the Thyroid Tumours”. Read more about this research project
