Nicole Byrom is a registered dietitian with extensive experience in clinical nutrition and media engagement. She works with Celiac Canada, providing expert guidance on managing celiac disease and gluten-related disorders. As a clinic dietitian, Nicole serves both inpatient and outpatient settings, offering personalized nutrition care to diverse populations.
Nicole is also the go-to dietitian for Global News, where she provides expert commentary and insights on a range of nutrition topics. She runs a thriving private practice, helping clients achieve their health and wellness goals through evidence-based nutrition strategies. Nicole lives in North Vancouver with her husband and children, balancing her professional commitments with family life in the beautiful West Coast community.
Autoimmune Thyroid Disease and Celiac Disease Webinar

This is a shared educational webinar presentation with TFC and Celiac Canada as there is a strong link between auto immune thyroid disease and celiac disease. There will be a 15 minute presentation from Nicole Byrom from Celiac Canada (a dietician) followed by about 15 minutes from Dr. Tala Abu-Hijleh (an endocrinologist). A Q&A session for attendees will take place after the presentations. The webinar will be managed by Celiac Canada.
The presentations will cover:
- What is celiac disease
- What is autoimmune thyroid disease
- The links between the two diseases
- What the audience needs to know for testing and how this may affect their health and diet
Dr. Tala Abu-Hijleh is an academic endocrinologist with a focus on managing thyroid disorders and thyroid cancer. She completed her Internal Medicine training at University of Ottawa, and a Master’s in medical education. She then went on to do her endocrinology fellowship at McMaster University, followed by a thyroidology and thyroid cancer fellowship at the University of Toronto. She now has her clinical practice at St Joseph Healthcare Hamilton, and appointment as assistant professor of medicine at McMaster University.

Dr. Ghaznavi was award the 2023 TFC Research grant. She will be presenting the results of her research project.
Dr. Sana Ghaznavi is an academic endocrinologist whose practice focuses on the management of thyroid nodules and thyroid cancers. She completed her medical school at the University of Alberta, an endocrinology fellowship at the University of Calgary, and a thyroid cancer fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York city. She now works as a clinical assistant professor within the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism, at the University of Calgary, with a cross appointment to the Department of Oncology.
Dr. Kelsey Roelofs
Thyroid Eye Disease Patient Panel

A panel of thyroid eye disease patients will relate their experiences. Dr. Roelofs will add her comments, followed by a Q&A session.
Dr. Kelsey Roelofs completed her medical education and residency training at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. Following this, she embarked on a one year ocular oncology fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital. She is currently completing an American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has published over 40 peer-review papers, 19 textbook chapters and was the 2021 recipient of the Bartley R. Frueh Research Award.

Dr. Jack R Wall MD, now retired and living in Melbourne, Australia, is the co-founder of the Thyroid Foundation of Canada. He is an honorary professor and adjunct member of the Department of Endocrinology of Macquarie University in Sydney and honorary professor at Notre Dame University of Australia. As a thyroid specialist, he has interests in thyroid and orbital autoimmunity and brain/endocrine/ associations. While he is not a psychiatrist, he has worked closely with Sydney based specialists in joint clinics where patients with mental health disorders and metabolic disorder combination were seen together.

Dr. Antonio Bianco is a professor of medicine and a member of the Committee on Molecular Metabolism and Nutrition at the University of Chicago, where he runs a laboratory funded by the National Institutes of Health to study thyroid hormones. He is also a former president of the American Thyroid Association.
Dr. Bianco will be speaking on his book “Rethinking Hypothyroidism: Why Treatment Must Change and What Patients Can Do”.

Dr Jesse Pasternak is an endocrine surgeon specializing in the surgical management of thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal tumors. After obtaining his undergraduate degree at McGill University, he completed his medical school and residency at McMaster University in Hamilton. He then moved to San Francisco, California where he trained as an Orlo Clark Fellow in Endocrine Surgery and Oncology at UCSF.
Dr Pasternak also completed a master’s degree (MPH) at Harvard University with a focus in epidemiology. As a surgeon at the University Health Network, his clinical focus is minimally invasive endocrine surgery. As a researcher, he studies clinical endocrine surgery and health outcomes.
