Dr. Jack R. Wall

Dr. Jack R Wall MD, now retired and living in Melbourne, Australia, is the co-founder of the Thyroid Foundation of Canada. He is an honorary professor and adjunct member of the Department of Endocrinology of Macquarie University in Sydney and honorary professor at Notre Dame University of Australia. As a thyroid specialist, he has interests in thyroid and orbital autoimmunity and brain/endocrine/ associations. While he is not a psychiatrist, he has worked closely with Sydney based specialists in joint clinics where patients with mental health disorders and metabolic disorder combination were seen together.

Dr. Wall will talk about the interrelationships between thyroid disorders and the common mental health diseases (MHD) namely depression and anxiety, with case examples from his long and international practice. Today in the post Covid -19 era, the prevalence of MHD has sky rocketed so its occasional co-occurrence with Graves’ hyperthyroidism or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis has become a fairly common and challenging clinical event. The family must be involved in the management of both the MHD and the thyroid problem. Understand the issue of radioiodine and its effects on the eyes and for the development of joint endocrine/psychiatric clinics.
